Just east of Historic Wilmington North Carolina on the Cape Fear Coast lie the island communities of Wrightsville Beach, Carolina Beach and Kure Beach. These beautiful, uncrowded beaches and nearby estuarine reserves provide a true haven for sun seekers, beachcombers and nature lovers, and a sportsman‘s paradise for anglers, mariners and water sports enthusiasts. Wrightsville beach is just outside of Wilmington to the east and is reached via Eastwood road which crosses over the Atlantic Intracoastal waterway. This community was established back in 1899 and has been a popular getaway every since. The friendly village atmosphere features a fishing pier, a variety of shops and a five mile stretch of clean, white sand.
The city park features lighted tennis courts, volleyball and basketball courts. There are also football and soccer fields as well as the Loop which is a fitness trail that circles the inner island. There are numerous marinas and charter fishing available along with shopping and some of the best seafood restaurants in the area. Lodging ranges from luxury hotels to motels to seasonal condo and beach house rentals.
Carolina and Kure beach are south of Wilmington and can be reached by taking Carolina Beach road (Hwy 421). Carolina Beach was established in 1857 and is a friendly resort community located on Pleasure Island, the larger of two barrier islands on the Cape Fear Coast. The area, with its popular boardwalk, features a nostalgic charm and wholesome family atmosphere. It represents a slice of coastal Americana with its marinas, pier, ferris wheel, gazebo, arcade and specialty shops. It features an active charter boat basin, offering nightly party cruises and offshore fishing excursions. Lodging ranges from high end hotels to motels to seasonal condo and house rentals.
Kure Beach, just south of Carolina beach, is a quieter community and is known for its colorful paint residents use on their houses. It features scenic views, uncrowded beaches, a fishing pier, casual restaurants and a variety of accommodations from hotels to seasonal condo and house rentals. At the southern tip of Kure beach is the Fort Fisher complex featuring the North Carolina Aquarium with a 235,000 gallon saltwater tank and a 20,000 square foot conservatory and the Fort Fisher State Recreation Area which was the last major stronghold of the Confederacy and has the largest earthen fortress in the South.
